Industrial Salt: Technical Salt for Various Industries
Industrial salt is technical salt used as a raw material and auxiliary in a wide range of industrial processes. From the chemical industry to water treatment, road management and the food industry: wherever salt plays a functional role, industrial salt is the standard choice. It is typically purchased in large quantities and delivered in bags, big bags or in bulk.
Nederlandse Zouthandel supplies industrial salt to companies and institutions, tailored to your application and purchase volume. Below you can read more about industrial salt, the sectors in which it is used, and how we deliver.
-
What is industrial salt?
Industrial salt is salt intended for technical and industrial applications, rather than for direct consumption. The purity, grain size and shape are tailored to the process in which the salt is used. For some applications, a coarse, unprocessed salt suffices, while other processes require high purity.
Since industrial salt is used in functional applications and purchased in large volumes, the emphasis is on consistent quality, reliable delivery and a competitive price per ton. Nederlandse Zouthandel works with you to determine the right specification for your process.

The Applications of Industrial Salt
Industrial salt plays an indispensable role in many sectors. We explain the main applications below.
Chemical industry
The chemical industry is the largest consumer of salt worldwide. Industrial salt serves as a basic raw material for the chlor-alkali process, where electrolysis of a salt solution produces chlorine, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and hydrogen. These substances in turn form the basis for countless products, from plastics such as PVC to soap, paper and hydrochloric acid.
Water treatment and softening
In industry, salt is widely used for water treatment. It regenerates the ion exchangers in softening installations, converting hard water into soft water. This is essential for processes where limescale can affect installations and product quality, such as in the food, laundry and process industries.
Tanning, textile and other industries
Salt is also used in tanning, textile dyeing, oil and gas extraction, and various other technical processes. Its wide applicability makes industrial salt a highly sought-after raw material across diverse sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Industrial Salt
-
What quality of industrial salt do I need for regenerating an industrial ion exchanger?
For industrial ion exchangers in water treatment, condensate polishing installations and demineralisation systems, vacuum salt in PDV grade with at least 99.9% NaCl and low Ca/Mg values is recommended. Lower grades lead to fouling of the resin bed and shorten the lifespan of the resin.
-
Do you supply industrial salt with a Certificate of Analysis per batch?
Yes. Every delivery is accompanied by a CoA containing the actual batch analysis, including NaCl content and levels of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, SO₄²⁻, insoluble matter and moisture. Additional analyses such as heavy metals can be provided on request.
-
What are the typical impurity levels in your industrial salt?
For vacuum salt in PDV grade, typical levels are: Ca²⁺ below 400 ppm, Mg²⁺ below 200 ppm, SO₄²⁻ below 2,500 ppm and insoluble matter below 0.01%. Stricter specifications, for example Ca²⁺ below 100 ppm, are available on request.
-
How is industrial salt delivered in bulk?
Bulk deliveries are made by silo truck and pneumatically blown into your silo. We coordinate logistics, delivery times and silo connection with you in advance. Brine is delivered by tanker.
-
Can I arrange a fixed contract for industrial salt?
Yes. For structural supply we work with annual contracts with fixed prices, agreed volumes and guaranteed delivery times. VMI arrangements are available on request.
